Abstract The rheological and thermal properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) and chemically modified cellulose nanofiber nanocomposites (PHBH/CNF) were investigated. The processability of the PHBH/CNF composite was also tested using an injection molding machine. Surface modification of CNF was conducted with alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) to control the viscosity and the crystallization rate of PHBH. The fast-scanning calorimeter (FSC) analysis showed that the crystallization rate of PHBH/CNF became four times faster than that of pure PHBH. The rheological measurement indicated that the dispersed ASA-modified CNF formed a network structure in PHBH and increased complex viscosity and storage modulus by about two to three orders of magnitude. Although PHBH alone is vulnerable to heat treatment, PHBH/CNF composites can improve rheological and thermal properties, reduce crystal size and reinforce the mechanical property. As a result, these effects increased the processability of PHBH by the injection molding process.
